# The Warm Little Light

what gratitude feels like, told gently

scroll down slowly ↓

## Sometimes, someone is kind to you.

Maybe they share something. Maybe they listen.
Maybe they just stay close when you
are sad.

And somewhere in your chest,
a warm little light switches on.

That light has a name. It is called gratitude.

## Where do you feel it?

It feels warm, right in the middle of your chest —
like sitting in a patch of sunshine.

Your shoulders let go.
Your breathing gets slow and easy.

You can breathe along with the light, if you like.
Only if you like.

## Now, the most important part.

The light is a gift, not a bill.

You do not owe anything back.
You do not have to earn it.You do not have to smile
if you don't feel like smiling.

And you do not have to look after the person who gave it.
That is not your job.
It was never your job.

Kindness that comes with a price is not kindness.
Real kindness is free. Real warmth
asks for nothing.

## So what do you do with the feeling?

Nothing at all, if you like.
You can simply feel it. It is yours to keep.

And one day — not because you must,
but because the light gets so full —you might
feel like passing a little warmth to someone else.

That is all gratitude is:
warmth that wants to travel.

after Sándor Ferenczi, who taught that a child needs tenderness without conditions—
and that a gift which demands payment is no gift at all.
